Training Philosophy: Paws and Presence

My training philosophy is built on emotional intelligence (EI)—the ability to recognize, understand, and manage both human and canine emotions to create a trust-based, cooperative training approach. Unlike traditional methods that rely solely on obedience and control, my approach emphasizes mutual communication, empathy, and psychological awareness to strengthen the bond between you and your dog.

Adam McLean

Adam McLean is a performance expert with a background in deep cognitive coaching, leadership, and elite training. A former athlete at the Air Force Academy, an Air Force pilot, and a cognitive performance specialist, Adam has spent over twenty years coaching high-performing individuals on mastering their mental game, including elite Department of Defense personnel, athletes, and professionals.

Beyond human performance, Adam brings a unique perspective to dog training, blending emotional intelligence with science-based techniques to strengthen the human-canine bond. With a PhD in performance psychology and extensive experience as an independent mental skills coach, Adam explores how emotional awareness, leadership, and trust shape communication between dogs and their handlers. A lifelong dog lover and trainer, Adam is passionate about helping people and their dogs connect deeply through emotionally intelligent training.

Mission And Vision

My mission is to help caring owners become calm, confident leaders for their dogs, creating trusting partnerships grounded in emotional intelligence, kindness, and science based training that improves daily life.

Adam's Path To Paws

Paws and Presence Training in Madison is my dog behaviour practice, blending a PhD in performance psychology, three decades as an Air Force officer and pilot, and professional canine behaviour qualifications.

The Heart Of Training

Every session rests on emotional intelligence, patience, and presence. I use calm, reward based methods that build trust, confidence, and clear communication so everyday life feels safer and more predictable.

Training Both Ends Of Leash

I coach you as carefully as I train your dog, combining human performance science with practical behaviour work. You learn to read emotions, respond calmly, and guide your dog with consistent leadership.
